Mumbai is currently under an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rain until August 19. Pune, on the other hand, is on a red alert with extremely heavy rainfall expected in the next two days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has extended its weather warnings for large parts of Maharashtra as monsoon rains continue to pour.
Several districts in the Konkan region, including Thane and Palghar, are also under an orange alert for the next three days. Ratnagiri has a red alert for August 17 and 18. According to the IMD, a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal has triggered a weather pattern causing intense rainfall along Maharashtra’s Konkan coast. This heavy rain is expected to continue till midweek.
How Much Rain Has Mumbai Got?

Various parts of Mumbai have crossed 100 mm of rain within 24 hours. On Sunday, the western suburbs averaged 104 mm, the island city 93 mm, and the eastern suburbs 78 mm.
Some areas received extremely heavy downpours: Charkop got 190 mm, Anand Nagar in Dahisar 188 mm, Borivali 168 mm, Powai 134 mm, Bhandup 129 mm, Fort 134 mm, Cotton Green 132 mm, and Grant Road 129 mm.
High Tide Warnings
Adding to the concerns, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) warned about high tides. A 3.32-meter tide was expected around 5:22 PM on Sunday, while an even higher tide of 3.54 meters was predicted for early Monday morning. Residents are asked to avoid going near the seafront during these times.
Mumbai’s Water Supply Situation
The good news is about Mumbai’s water supply. The seven lakes supplying drinking water are almost full, with water levels at 90% of total capacity. As of Sunday morning, the total reservoir stock stood at around 13.12 lakh million litres, compared to 14.47 lakh million litres overall.
Tulsi Lake is fully filled at 100%, with others close behind Tansa at 98.45%, Middle Vaitarna at 97.17%, Vihar at nearly 90%, Bhatsa at 89.23%, Modak Sagar at 87.28%, and Upper Vaitarna at 86.48%. The catchment areas of these lakes received significant rainfall in the past 24 hours, helping keep the levels high.
Mumbai Local Train Status
Mumbai’s suburban trains, the lifeline of the city, continued running on Sunday but with delays. Waterlogging remains a risk in low-lying areas, especially during high tides and heavy rain. Commuters are advised to check train status notifications and plan their travel carefully. Further delays or disruptions are possible at the start of the week.
Officials have asked people in Mumbai and Pune to stay alert, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay indoors if possible, as heavy rains are expected to continue.
