Bank Holiday on 15 and 16 August: Independence Day & Janmashtami Break

If you have essential bank work lined up, it’s better to plan your schedule. Banks across India will remain closed on Friday, 15 August, for Independence Day, which is a nationwide public holiday listed under the Reserve Bank of India’s official holiday calendar.

Since the holiday comes right before the weekend, many places will see an extended bank holiday. While physical banking services like cash deposits, cheque clearance, or passbook updates won’t be available during this time, rest assured that banking apps, ATMs, and online services will continue to operate as usual, providing you with the convenience you need.

Janmashtami adds to the long weekend.

The festival of Janmashtami, celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna, falls on Saturday, 16 August. It is a declared bank holiday in several states, including Gujarat, Mizoram, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Telangana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Meghalaya, Andhra Pradesh, and the Union Territories of Chandigarh, Jammu, and Srinagar. Janmashtami is a significant Hindu festival that marks the birth of Lord Krishna, a revered deity in Hinduism.

However, in states where Janmashtami is not an official holiday, banks will remain open on Saturday.

What this means for customers

  • In states observing Janmashtami as a bank holiday, customers will face a three-day break — Friday (Independence Day), Saturday (Janmashtami), and Sunday (weekly holiday).
  • In other states, banks will only be closed on 15 August and Sunday, 17 August, with Saturday (16 August) working as usual.

So, if you need to visit the bank for anything important, it’s your responsibility to wrap up your transactions before the holiday stretch. Early planning is key to ensuring your banking needs are met.
