Today, Saturday, August 16, 2025, several cities across India are observing a bank holiday for Krishna Janmashtami, while in many other cities, banks are operating as usual. The holiday is part of the RBI’s official 2025 calendar, which lists both national and regional holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act.

Janmashtami, celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna, is one of the most important Hindu festivals. This year marks the 5252nd birth anniversary of Lord Krishna, and in many regions, Dahi Handi festivities are also part of the celebrations.

RBI Holiday Guidelines
Apart from nationwide holidays, banks also remain closed on Sundays and on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month. According to the RBI’s August 2025 calendar, there are 15 bank holidays in total this month, including today’s Janmashtami.

Closed Today (Janmashtami Holiday): Ahmedabad, Aizawl, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Dehradun, Gangtok, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Lucknow, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, Shillong, Srinagar, Vijayawada.

Open Today (Normal Working): Agartala, Belapur, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Guwahati, Imphal, Itanagar, Kochi, Kohima, Kolkata, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Panaji, Shimla, Thiruvananthapuram.

Digital Banking Services Available
Even though bank branches in the above cities are closed for the day, customers can still access essential services, such as:

Online & Mobile Banking – fund transfers, bill payments, account balance.

ATM Services & Debit/Credit Card Transactions.

NEFT & RTGS transfers during operational hours.

Online requests like new cheques, demand drafts, or account-related updates.

What Customers Should Do
If you live in a city where banks are closed today, you may want to plan physical transactions on the next working day. Meanwhile, digital banking and ATMs remain operational, so routine payments and transfers can continue without interruption.
